The James Armstrong Richardson International Airport in Winnipeg is the “greenest airport” in Canada. Winnipeg’s new airport is a source of pride for the Winnipeg community, and with good reason. Within a year of sharing its transparent, luminous pavilions with the world, CBC News deemed it “One of the Top 10 Airports in the World,” London’s The Daily Telegraph called it one of “The World’s Most Stylish Airports,” and the Travel Channel considered it one of the “World’s Most Iconic Airports.”

Designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects in collaboration with Stantec, the new airport terminal which draws design inspiration from Manitoba’s vast prairies and sky, is the first freestanding airport building in Canada to be LEED certified.

The building is long and low with a floating silver roof. Skylights, an atrium, and windows fill the terminal with light and bring the big sky inside. Passengers can see through the building, across the prairie and to downtown Winnipeg.

These views create a strong sense of place, while views of the airfield make it easy for passengers to find their planes. Glassboarding bridgesalso help to orient passengers, givingthem an immediate glimpse into the terminal upon arrival. Inside, billowing wood ceilings and wood-paneled walls create a warm inviting environment.
